Hi, all! Wow, first of all, how is it already July tomorrow?! I’m pretty bummed… June is probably my favorite month. It’s the Friday of summer… so much hope & expectation & time left. July just goes by so quickly and August is a constant scramble to hold on to summer…
As I suspected, I’ve really been enjoying my free time in the evenings… I’ve been working on a 100 page booklet for H2O’s The Well class, which I’ve been looking forward to each day. The current InDesign file is messy with too many text boxes, double spacing between sentences (those Ohioans), and misaligned text. Also, I’m updating the color, text, and illustrations to match H2O’s brand (Alex—when he’s not in grad school—and I serve on our church’s design team. Yep, they’re super cool for having a design team). If this seems strange, you have to know that formatting things to be perfect & precise is one of my favorite things to do.
When I’m not working on that, I’m either keeping up with cleaning, hanging out with friends, or watching a movie with Alex. Also, talking a lot with him!! Mostly about our communication. I feel like recently I’ve been noticing the defensive, instigative way I talk more & more, and it’s a bummer every time. I almost always immediately regret it. I have such awful control of my tone of voice. But, I’m working on it… today I made a conscious effort (constantly) to slow down and listen, try to understand where the other person’s coming from (before assuming the worst), and answer calmly, and not defensively. It will definitely be an uphill battle but now I know it’s possible and lucrative.
Also, regarding this cleaning situation I mentioned above, which is also related to talking about our communication: Alex & I had some mismatched expectations regarding keeping up with housework and it was secretly bothering both of us—mainly him. I wasn’t really trying to help out, and he wasn’t sure if I felt like he “owed me” from this school year, or something else. Although I’ve been trying to convince myself I wanted housework to be equal between us, I just kept thinking (from the couch) “just this one day, I’ll take a break…”
So we talked and decided to bring him in on my list app so that we could split our tasks into groups (Eleanor & Plants) and switch off every day. That way I’m not overwhelmed with tasks yet too proud to ask for help. It’s been successful so far this week. I missed one day but decided it was only fair to take both groups the next day, so Alex wasn’t ending up with all the work from the past 2 days… if that makes sense.
Here’s what else I’ve been up to, via my phone’s photos…
I bought these shoes from Poshmark back in April, along with so many other things since then… Poshmark has been a perfect combination of second-hand shopping and not going out shopping. Anyway, I’ve been looking for shoes like this for a few years, never finding just what I want for a good price… but I got these for $15. I just ordered three dresses, so I’ll probably post all the good stuff I’ve found soon…
These are my good friends from elementary & high school, Stephanie and Jessie! We go way back, obviously… they were actually the friends who stuck by me during & after the hardest period of my life. I have such fond memories with them, and am tearing up just thinking about them. But Steph, in the middle, is getting married in a few weeks, and I’m so glad I’ll be there to celebrate with her! This was at her bridal shower. 😊
We had a great meeting with some clients at work last week. Just look at all of that collaboration! Possibly my favorite part of work is when we sit around and talk about design, strategy, etc.
Breakfast meeting with some of my favorite dudes (my coworkers). All happy campers.
Alex made this incredible general tso’s cauliflower at the beginning of the week & we’ve had it almost every day for lunch. We had to take a break though, because while delicious (and so close to the “real thing”!) it was taking a toll on our bodies & working habits. 😴 I guess a pile of carbs will do that to you. This is also a good time to mention that we started jogging & doing yoga on alternating mornings.
I started using Boomerang. Mostly on plants. Just look at their dancing!
Our garden is so close to giving us a tomato!! We’ve been using a lot of herbs from it, but not quite any veggies yet.
Here’s our girl Eleanor on the ledge of the screen door. She’s started sitting here and whining at whoever is outside for not hanging out with her.
And I’ll leave you with two quotes I had screenshots of on my phone:
“When we fight against the injustices of the world today, we are participating in God’s redemptive mission.”
—Eric Asp, from an H2O sermon this past semester
(This statement means so much to me, I’d get it tattooed (but I know I’d never decide on a font))
“We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable selves to be deeply seen and known, and when we honor the connection that grows from that offering with trust, respect, kindness, and affection.”
—Brene Brown, via my friend Anna’s instagram
I hope your week is going well—and if not, tomorrow’s Friday! The June of the week. 🌞
